3/21/2013

Today is 3/21, World Down Syndrome Day. As we continue along in our journey, we find ourselves looking forward to days like this- days where we can celebrate the joy that is Porter. This year, it's also a day we can celebrate the amazing people who have loved our son over the past year. Because we haven't been on this journey alone. We've been supported by family, friends, neighbors, doctors, teachers, members of our Early Intervention team and even strangers. It's been an amazing year because of you!

What does Down Syndrome mean to us today? It means we get to love a happy, hungry, sleepy little man who has just turned one year old. Like many other one year olds, he has favorite toys, favorite people and favorite foods. He's learning sign language and uses it to tell us when he wants milk, to eat, and to be picked up. He can be both noisy and nosy and LOVES attention. He's feeding himself. He loves bath time and bed time stories, mostly because he gets to spend time with his big sister, who he adores, during these times. He spends his day at daycare, where he plays with all his friends and teachers who genuinely love him. We're working a little harder than most on skills that will help him grow stronger as he learns to crawl, walk and speak. We spend a few hours a week with occupational, physical and speech therapists who are helping us learn how we can help him grow stronger and build good habits. We see the therapies work before our eyes. Yes, we may work a little harder, and it may take a little longer, but before we know it he'll be crawling, walking and talking. And, we will celebrate every one of these milestones.

What else does Down Syndrome mean to us? It means teamwork in ways we never imagined possible. It means that we've built friendships with amazing families who share this journey with us. It means that we've got a team of amazing therapists and a case worker who truly love our son and are vested in his growth. It means that we've got doctors who truly care and are willing to work together to ensure he's on the right track. It means being aware that others are on special journeys of their own and that we should treat everyone with respect. It means slowing down. It means supporting local businesses who employ differently abled individuals.  It means that our lives have changed for the better.  We hope that yours have too, by being a part of ours. Thank you for making today a day to celebrate!
Porter Charles Thompson, we love you right up to the moon and back!

Thank you Grammy & Pa!

Dear Grammy & Pa,
Thank you for taking a trip on a purple air plane to visit us for my birthday. I loved having you at my party! I can't wait to see you again in June.
Love,
Porter

Homework!

Penny had her first homework assignment. She had fun picking a different color for each letter. She needed help with most of the curvy letters, but is off to a good start on her straight letters :)

Cake- Take 2

Because he wasn't a fan at his party, with a large audience, we decided to see how he would enjoy a cupcake at dinner...I think he loved it- especially on his toes! What do you think?

Straw Cup

He can do it!
We've been working on the straw for weeks. Tonight, it all clicked and he drank the entire cup of yogurt-milk deliciousness...in fact, he got a little mad when it was empty. Yay Bubby!

Things that make me smile

Finding Penny's socks purposefully placed in my shoes :)

Spread the Word to End the Word

Today we join with the Down Syndrome community to Spread the Word to End the Word. You can join us too, by clicking here!
I encourage you to support our family by removing the R-Word from your vocabulary. You can take it a step further and join us in our advocacy efforts, as we attempt to educate friends, co-workers and acquaintances when we hear them use the word. There is no need to be offensive- a simple "I'd appreciate if you chose a less offensive adjective like absurd" is all it takes to help raise awareness.
Do it for Porter! Do it for his big sister Penny! Do it for us!
Thank you!

I love this "Buy a Dictionary Poster" by Alison Rowan:
There are so many better words to describe what you're feeling! Go ahead and use a synonym :) Spread the love. Spread the word!

Party Time

Today we celebrated Porter!
The happiest, most amazing little man :) We are so happy and thankful that you're part of our lives!
Today we celebrated a milestone, but we also celebrated love. Because this year has been filled with love!
We tried cake. We didn't like cake (however, we loved the meatballs).
We also loved spending time with our friends. I can just picture the three of them causing trouble in a few years!
 Special thanks to Nana,
 Papa,
 Grammy & Pa
for everything you did to help us get ready for the big party :) We couldn't have pulled it off without your help (and Aunt Nic, Uncle Dave, Aunt Becky, Uncle Adam, Aunt Missy & Almost Uncle Eric too!).
It was an amazing day, spent with amazing friends and family.
Watching the kids play together is amazing!
And of course, Nana was right there in the middle of it!
Monkey-ing around was a great way to spend our day.
And, this little man...
well, he was just the icing on the cake! Baby Cameron- thanks so much for coming to the party...you are a sweetheart and we can't wait to watch you grow up with the rest of the crew.
To all our friends and family who joined us today, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for not only accepting Porter, but for loving him just as much as we do. And, to all those who have celebrated with us from afar with thoughts, prayers and kind words, THANK YOU!!!
Happy Birthday Porter!
